PARIS, THE CITY OF LOVE AND LIGHT
Paris has been the most romantic destination in the
world in the popular imagination for time immemorial, a perception reinforced
by films.
Paris is synonymous with art and the city has numerous art galleries showcasing
some of the best masterpieces from around the world, from pre-history to the
Renaissance, contemporary and classic Paris is truly
magnificent and a dream place for travelers. In
2014 Paris welcomed 15.6 million visitors into the capital – and it’s no
surprise it’s one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world as its
famous for its art, culture and history. Paris is full of top attractions,
museums, art galleries, things to do and places to go no matter what time of
year you’re planning on going.
TOURIST ATTRACTIONS
Eiffel Tower
Visiting
the iconic symbol of Paris usually ranks Eiffel Tower as the number one thing
to do for most tourists. Towering more than 1,000 feet (300 meters) high in the
Champ de Mars park, this iron structure was constructed for the 1889 World
Exposition. One of the world’s most photographed tourist attractions, the
Eiffel Tower presents an excellent photography opportunity for both day and
night times. Visitors can ride the elevator to see incredible views of the city
or dine in one of the two fine restaurants that are situated within the tower. From its looming construction to its stunning
views of the city and just the general energy and buzz of the place, it really
does live up to the billing.
Louvre
Museum
Topping the list of the
world’s most visited museums, the Louvre Museum is located in the Louvre Palace
with its signature glass pyramid marking its entrance. Housing a collection of
more than 1 million objects, the Louvre boasts some of the world’s most famous
art works such as Leonardo da Vinci’s “Mona Lisa,” Michelangelo’s “Dying Slave”
and the Greek statue, “Venus of Milo.” Other popular exhibits include the
extravagant apartments of Napoleon III, the ancient Code of Hammurabi, Egyptian
antiquities and paintings by masters like Rembrandt and Rubens. It serves as the home of
many artworks of the pre 20th-century era. The place has a lot of history in
itself so visiting it would also mean travelling back in time.
Arc
de Triomphe
One of the most popular tourist attractions in Paris, the
Arc de Triomphe was constructed in 1806 to memorialize the triumphal battles of
Napoleon Bonaparte. Standing 164 feet high and 148 feet (50 by 45 meters) wide,
the arch features intricate reliefs depicting victorious battles and engraved
names of many who died fighting for the emperor. Beneath the arch is the Tomb
of the Unknown Soldier from the first world war.
Notre Dame
No trip to Paris could be complete without a visit to the world
famous Notre Dame cathedral. Standing at the very heart of the city, Notre Dame is an iconic
cathedral and a staple entry on any list of what to see in Paris. With its
looming ceilings and magnificent stained-glass windows, it's a wonderful place
to visit. Standing more than
400 feet (120 meters) high with two lofty towers and a spire, this marvelous
church is considered a supreme example of French Gothic architecture. A tour of
this 13th century masterpiece allows visitors to admire the awe-inspiring rose
windows, Gothic carvings, beautiful sculptures and a collection of relics. . Its fame
and location leave it slightly over-glorified, but it's genuinely impressive
all the same.
Sacre-Coeur
One of the most noticeable landmarks in Paris is the
striking white-domed basilica of the Sacre-Coeur. Situated at the city’s
highest point on Montmartre hill, this stunning basilica draws many tourists
every year to see its marble architecture and gorgeous interior. A tour awards
visitors with views of gold mosaics, stained-glass windows and one of the
world’s largest clocks.
Disney land
When Europeans can’t get to Los Angeles to see the original
Disneyland, they head to Disneyland Paris, the most visited theme park in
Europe. Just like its namesake, Disneyland Paris is more than just a theme park
with spectacular rides. It’s a resort with hotels, shopping and golf among its
varied activities. In 1992, it became the second Disney park to open outside of
the United States. It’s located about 30 km (20 miles) from central Paris.
The catacombs of paris:
While most people come to this city for romance,
there’s a darker side to be found… This underground burial complex houses six
million skeletons dating to the 18th century. Stacked in endless corridors,
it’s a fascinating and haunting place. If you have the courage, it’s one of the
most interesting places in Paris to see. There
are about 2 kilometers of tunnels in the catacombs and the temperature is
around 14°C so it is useful to take a jacket with you.
Saint martin canal
In the 19th century, the area was mostly occupied by working-class
laborers.Only recently has it started to attract well-to-do professionals eager
to take up residence in apartments with views of the canal. As a result,
it's come to be known as an area frequented by bohos; new restaurants, cafes,
and fashion boutiques are continually springing up in the neighborhood. In
the spring and summer, locals come in droves to the banks of the Saint-Martin
Canal to picnic, strum guitars waterside, and bask in the lazy long evenings as
dusk settles over the photogenic area. Cafes and quirky boutiques flank the water and iron
footbridges.
